It is with tremendous sadness that we share with all of you the deeply painful news of the passing of Frank A. Harris, our 12th Tikkun Olam Award recipient. We trust this extraordinary man’s light will always be with us.
From Sue Herz (a 2nd generation committee member):
Early Wednesday morning (Feb. 22nd) , Frank took his last breath.
Yesterday, his son, Bobby, gave a warning shot, saying this was imminent, that “this is his time.” What a fighter. For months Frank has been battling the breathing problems donated by the pneumonia he picked up at the beginning of winter.
Funeral will be Sunday (2/26) at 12:00 noon at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 21 Broad Street West, Mount Vernon, NY 10552.
Frank, like Bill, was a child survivor of the Holocaust from Fürth, Germany. On March 9, 1939, at the age of 16, during the night, his father put him on a Kindertransport leaving Germany bound for Holland. He did not know if he would ever see his family again.
Fortunately, his parents were could leave for England in July 1939 and he was able to join them there shortly thereafter. In late 1940, they sailed to the U.S. in a British convoy accompanied and protected by destroyers, arriving in New York on October 2, 1940.
Beginning in 1978, Frank single handedly initiated periodic reunions for first generation survivors of the Fürth-Nüremberg community. In 2012 the tenth reunion was held comprised of five generations of survivors and their families. You can read about it HERE.
Frank’s story is one of courage, humility, strength, resilience, optimism and inspiration. You can read more about him at the following links:
His presence will be sorely missed.
