#StopThisMadness – 5/27/14 Update from Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly

Harriet And Bill –

Gabby and I were heartbroken to learn of yet another mass shooting carried out by a disturbed young man over the weekend in California, this one brazenly targeting women.

Whether it’s this latest incident, Adam Lanza in Newtown, Gabby’s shooter in Tucson, James Holmes in Aurora, or Aaron Alexis at The Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. — these mass shootings are too often followed by stories about the perpetrator’s history of severe mental illness.

The California shooter’s aunt said that she didn’t know how a “sick, disturbed young man was able to get hold of a gun.”

It’s a good question, and it’s one that demands an immediate answer, and more importantly … solutions.

Sign our petition telling Congress to pass legislation that 1) gives law enforcement the tools they need to prevent the dangerously mentally ill from having easy access to guns and 2) protects women from stalkers and domestic abusers.

Thankfully, taking action on mental health and protecting women from gun violence and intimidation are issues Democrats and Republicans can agree on — despite the filibuster of expanded background checks last year.

Congress must stop hiding behind the excuse of politics and take up this issue to ensure the dangerously mentally ill don’t have easy access to guns and to protect women from gun death and intimidation. Sign our petition and let them know you agree.

Taking immediate action on this important issue will save lives.

Thanks for making your voice heard.
